Chapter Five: Iris

One text a year for over a decade, and just like that, Alex appears in front of me. With wide eyes and momentarily frozen, I look her up and down and everything about her comes back to me.

As is typical of her, she looks incredible. Her consistently thin figure is now both thin and fit. A strapless, bold purple custom-fitted dress clings tight to her and rides just above the knee. A classy white gold belt sits around her tiny waist drawing attention to her small frame. Her tanned toned arms are enviable and her flawless long legs end only where her toes peep out from her red-bottom heels.

As she lifts her hand, an enormous glittery wedding ring shines in my eyes.

“Oh my goodness, sis! It’s been so long since I’ve seen you,” she throws her arms around me before I can dodge them. She steps back with her hands still touching my shoulders and runs her eyes down my body. “You haven’t changed an inch. Exactly the same.”

And apparently so are you, Alex. Exactly the same.

Leaving my arms hanging by my sides, I blankly stare at her, completely speechless.

“Can we just say that the past is the past? Let’s be best friends again,” Alex insists. Without giving me any time to comment on the matter, she takes over the conversation just as she used to in the past. She stands in front of Cliff and checks him out in an obvious way. “Sis, I’m so glad you were able to move on. He’s cute,” she winks.

Scrunching my face and furrowing my brows, I can’t believe she’s bringing Cliff into this. Ready to give her an earful, I inhale deeply and part my lips to speak. But Cliff shimmies in between us.

“Thanks for meeting us so late, Alex. But we don’t have much time and we need to get right to the point. We’re here for blueprints.”

For the first time in my life, I see Alex back down. She smooths out the front of her dress and gently clears her throat. “Right, let’s move into my office. This way.” She whirls around and marches down the hall.

As we follow behind her, Cliff reaches down and takes my hand. At that moment all my fears, worries, and frustrations are set at ease. No longer am I concerned with the shock of seeing my sister. The only thing on my mind is the strong man at my side who gets it, without me even saying a word.

Sitting across the table from Alex, she flashes her overly white teeth when she smiles. Waving her hand over the table, she says, “You have my attention, tell me about your project.”

Being the seemingly perfect man that he is, Cliff doesn’t hesitate to speak. “It’s a renovation of the inside of a spa.” He nudges me and says, “Show her your notebook.”

I hesitate at first but ultimately find the drawing that Val approved and lay the book on the table as Cliff continues.

“Iris’s ideas here are the baseline for the blueprints.
